There is nothing more soothing or peaceful as spinning! Come twist the day away spinning fibers as light as clouds, creating novelty yarns, or learning other new spinning techniques from our highly qualified staff.

 
 

SPINNING 2

Now that you know what the knobs on your spinning wheel are for, is it time for another class? Spinning 2 will include such varied topics as t.p.i. (twists per inch), use of wool combs, Navajo plying and more. We will cover different techniques to give you more control over the size and twist of the yarn you spin. BEGINNING SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. BRING YOUR WHEEL. FIBERS PROVIDED.

SHOW THAT SKEIN!!

There is usually a printed set of criteria that is pretty standard. There are also discretionary points based on judge’s likes and dislikes. We will review basics and go through judging cards. Bring some of your own skeins to review. This is a perfect opportunity to have your skeins critiqued in a friendly, professional manner as a wonderful learning experience.

Sharon has been raising sheep forever, and Vairs Varieties always has wonderful fleece. She will bring samples and years of experience to help you learn how to choose the best fleece for your handspun project. Spinners new and old will benefit from her knowledge.

DROP SPINDLE SPINNING

The “dreaded drop spindle” need not be feared at all. All it takes is a little practice and a sense of humor. Come use our spindles or bring your own. ALL LEVELS WELCOME.

BEGINNING SPINNING ON A WHEEL
6 Sessions $150
Begins Thursday, June 12, 7-9:30pm, (No Class July 3)
Dye day-Saturday, July 26, 10-3pm

Spider Woman taught the Navajo women to spin with a spindle made of lightning and turquoise. While we can't provide that kind of equipment, we can continue the tradition. Wool, greasy, clean and commercially processed is our fiber. The last class is an all day natural dye workshop. Women who are pregnant should take the dye class at a later time when they are not pregnant. ALL EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED.
PLEASE WEAR OLD CLOTHES.

SPINNING FINE YARNS

If you always wanted to spin for lace and admired Russian lace shawls, this workshop will be just what you need to gain confidence and skill. You will learn to comb fiber for lace, spin commercial combed top into lace and gossamer yarn, spin, ply and finish yarns for Russian lace and gossamer shawls. You will learn to spin fine wool, alpaca and goat fibers.
INTERMEDIATE SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. BRING WHEEL (NO BOBBIN LED WHEELS PLEASE) OR RUSSIAN SUPPORTED SPINDLE, CARDERS, FINE COMBS (IF YOU HAVE THEM) EXTRA BOBBINS, LAZY KATE, FAST FLYERS OR HIGHER SPEED WHORLS, NIDDY NODDY AND A CONE OF SILK OR SEWING THREAD FOR RUSSIAN STYLE LACE YARNS.

COME SPIN WITH ME

Whether sheep’s wool, alpaca, mohair, silk or a blend—what is your favorite? Why? Try a variety of fibers and compare. Learn characteristics and properties. All in black. What about black and white (Jacob’s sheep) or pinto alpaca (applied to hand carders in a special way)? INTERMEDIATE SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. BRING WHEEL, CARDERS, SOMETHING YOU HAVE SPUN (YARN OR FINISHED ITEM) AND ANY FIBER YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE.

PLYING WITH PLEASURE
2 Sessions $65

How do you finish your yarn after you’ve spun singles? As much care should go into plying as spinning. Two ply, three ply, Navajo and cabled yarns—how do you choose and why? Is a balanced yarn necessary? We will spin them all and you can decide for yourself.
INTERMEDIATE SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. BRING YOUR OWN WHEEL. FIBERS PROVIDED.

WILD AND CRAZY YARNS
1 Day $65

Inspired by Jacyee Boggs…these bumps, beehives, halos, coils, cores and encasements are to die for! OMG! These are all wild, wonderful and crazy yarns with the structural integrity you are looking for in your special projects. The samples are the proof of the pudding. INTERMEDIATE SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. FIBERS PROVIDED.
BRING ALL THE NORMAL SPINNING TOOLS (EVERYTHING) AND A LOT OF ENTHUSIASM!
