HOW TO CHOOSE A FLEECE

Sharon has been raising sheep forever, and Vairs Varieties always has wonderful fleece. She will bring samples and years of experience to help you learn how to choose the best fleece for your handspun project. Spinners new and old will benefit from her knowledge.

BEGINNING SPINNING ON A WHEEL
6 Sessions $155
Begins Thursday, May 7, 7-9:30pm,
Dye day-Saturday, June 6, 10-3pm

Spider Woman taught the Navajo women to spin with a spindle made of lightning and turquoise. While we can't provide that kind of equipment, we can continue the tradition. Wool, greasy, clean and commercially processed is our fiber. The last class is an all day natural dye workshop. Women who are pregnant should take the dye class at a later time when they are not pregnant. ALL EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED.
PLEASE WEAR OLD CLOTHES.

SPINNING REFRESHER
2 Sessions $60

Is your spinning wheel just gathering dust? Want a quick review of spinning basics? We’ll spend the evening reviewing wheel maintenance, the difference between woolen and worsted and plying techniques. BRING YOUR WHEEL, THREE BOBBINS AND A LAZY KATE. FIBERS PROVIDED.

FIBER PREPARATION
2 Sessions $60
Thursday, July 9 & 16, 7-9:30pm

Confused about how you should prepare your favorite fleece? It depends. Why do you card some fibers, comb others and what do you do with a flick carder? We will work with combs, flickers and drumcarders and see what happens. Shuttles will provide fiber, but if you want to bring some of your stash to try, please do so. BEGINNING SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. FIBERS PROVIDED. BRING YOUR WHEEL.

SPIN THE CAMELIDS
1 Session $40
Saturday, July 18, 1-4pm

From Camel to both Alpacas to Paco Vicuna and Llama, we’ll spin these wonderful fibers. You will blend natural colors, plus add silk, mohair or angora for a special look. Yarns and finished projects using handspun will be shown. INTERMEDIATE SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. FIBERS PROVIDED. BRING YOUR WHEEL AND ALL THE PARTS, CARDERS AND SOMETHING YOU’VE MADE FROM YOUR HANDSPUN.

SPINNING 2
4 Sessions $100

Now that you know what the knobs on your spinning wheel are for, is it time for another class? Spinning 2 will include such varied topics as t.p.i. (twists per inch), use of wool combs, Navajo plying and more. We will cover different techniques to give you more control over the size and twist of the yarn you spin. BEGINNING SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. BRING YOUR WHEEL. FIBERS PROVIDED.

TASTE OF SPINNING
2 Days $130
Saturday, August 8 & Sunday, August 9, 10-4pm

If you have always wanted to spin, have taught yourself a little, or haven’t spun for awhile, this workshop will be just what you need to gain confidence and skill. We will start with a beautiful fleece, learn to card, spin, ply and set the twist. Then we will spin woolen and worsted yarns, some commercially prepared fibers and discuss wheel maintenance. ALL EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED. PLEASE WEAR OLD CLOTHES.

DROP SPINDLE SPINNING
1 Session $40

The “dreaded drop spindle” need not be feared at all. All it takes is a little practice and a sense of humor. Come use our spindles or bring your own. We’ll twist the night away.
ALL LEVELS WELCOME. USE OF SPINDLES AND FIBERS PROVIDED.

SPIN WITH METAL
1 Session $40
Saturday, August 29, 1-3pm

Have you ever tried to use your smart phone while wearing gloves? We can make those gloves work by adding a little metal to your handspun. You will learn how to add the steel fiber to your yarn and go home with enough yarn to knit or sew into several glove finger tips. BRING YOUR WHEEL, 3 BOBBINS, LAZY KATE AND HANDCARDS.
